Project Overview

Mourik successfully planned and executed the Platformer 3 heat exchanger shutdown scope during the Stanlow Refinery Block Outage. The project comprised the overhaul of 22 heat exchangers within a tight schedule, including disassembly, bundle extraction and installation, and reassembly using a combination of new and refurbished bundles. The scope also included the replacement of several valves and instruments.

Challenge and Approach

EET Fuels required the complete overhaul of 22 heat exchangers, along with associated valves and instrumentation, during a major site turnaround, making timely execution essential. Multiple contractors were working simultaneously in the same areas, increasing the risk of congestion, delays, and interface conflicts. Strict safety standards, operational continuity requirements, and regulatory compliance had to be maintained throughout the turnaround.

Our Approach

Mourik adopted a proactive and collaborative approach, integrating closely with the client’s site team from the early planning stages. Core team members, including execution management, supervision, QA, and lifting specialist, dedicated time on-site ahead of execution to fully understand the installation, interfaces, and stakeholder landscape. This allowed potential bottlenecks and constraints to be identified in advance and incorporated into a flexible, optimised execution plan.

A key element of the strategy was the deployment of a self-propelled bundle puller. This specialised equipment enabled continued progress in areas where crane availability was limited or restricted due to wind conditions or competing activities. As a result, downtime was minimised and productivity increased.

The project was executed using Mourik’s proven technical expertise, experienced personnel, and specialist equipment. Close coordination with EET Fuels and other contractors ensured alignment on priorities, safe execution, and efficient use of shared workspaces. This tailored approach improved overall efficiency, reduced waiting times, and ensured the work could progress even under challenging site conditions.

The Result

Mourik successfully delivered the exchanger overhaul. The project contributed directly to maintaining the refinery’s critical turnaround timeline, enabling timely system handover, and supporting the successful recommissioning of the units.
