Chromage Mossu in Waasmunster is a family-owned business specializing in the electroplating of parts for classic cars and heritage items. In late 2023, Chromage Mossu was struck by a major fire. Since the company works with various hazardous substances, the debris had to be professionally cleaned up after the fire to avoid serious environmental risks. At the insurer’s request, we developed a plan for this. We were awarded the contract based on our many years of experience in such high-risk projects. In three weeks, we completed the cleanup work fully and safely, allowing the Mossu family to begin rebuilding their business.
Analyze, Repackage, and Dispose
The damage was significant, but the volume of hazardous waste remained relatively limited. In total, we cleared approximately 50 tons of chemical waste, spread across the building and the grounds. First, we took samples and analyzed the waste materials. Because the packaging and labels were often burned or damaged, we had to inspect and analyze each drum and container individually. Based on those results, we repackaged the waste in UN-approved containers. We transported all waste materials to certified processors.
Relying on experience and insight
The complexity lay in the nature and diversity of the substances, the damaged condition in which we found them, and the need to handle each component correctly and safely. Products such as cyanide and heavy metals require the utmost caution, both during analysis and handling. We worked closely with laboratories and planned each transport in consultation with the processors. Safety was always our top priority. Thanks to a rigorous approach and clear communication, the work proceeded without a single incident.
The smooth collaboration with the insurer and the owners ensured that Chromage Mossu was able to resume operations very quickly. That was important, because Chromage Mossu is a unique artisanal business in Flanders. Thanks to our responsiveness and swift execution, Chromage Mossu was able to rise from the ashes—literally and figuratively—in July 2024.
