Neste is the world's largest producer of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. The company has three production sites, two of which are located in Europe. Mourik provides support to Neste at both these European sites, with services ranging from industrial cleaning to civil engineering work.
Rotterdam site: Multidisciplinary approach with a single point of contact
Since the plant was built in 2008, Mourik has been the fixed maintenance partner for various disciplines. This saves time and ensures an efficient approach. ‘We don’t think in terms of divisions or disciplines. We have one single point of contact for all our questions: the project lead. He takes charge of matters internally at Mourik. This makes the job much easier for us as a small maintenance team,’ says Edwin Kooiman, Maintenance Area Lead at Neste.
An example of the multidisciplinary approach was the inspection of the basin into which all the factory's sewers discharge. This basin must be inspected once every ten years. Because the water was contaminated and the plant had to remain operational, a temporary water purification system was set up in collaboration with Mourik's environmental specialists. Mourik subsidiary Vogel repaired the basin and Mourik's civil engineering experts built a sandbag wall to dam the basin.
‘When multiple disciplines are required, the project is often technically complex. I find this challenging and interesting,’ says Marcel de Jong, Business Unit Manager at Mourik Industry.
Maintenance with impact
In addition to major turnarounds and projects, Mourik also takes care of daily maintenance work, such as industrial cleaning, mechanical and civil engineering, inspections and water purification. A few years ago, Mourik was also involved in the plant’s expansion. Due to Neste's growth – from 150 to 400 employees in two years – flexibility is crucial. Mourik offers this flexibility and actively contributes to finding solutions.
‘The partnership is hands-on and pleasant. We solve challenges together and that is exactly what we need,’ says Edwin. ‘Thanks to the strict approach to maintenance stops, the plant can often start up earlier than planned, increasing our production capacity in the process.’
The partnership between Mourik and Neste goes beyond a standard maintenance contract. Several Mourik employees have been working at Neste for years and feel a connection to the plant. Edwin: ‘We feels like one team, and we are proud of what we achieve here together.’
