Safe@SPIE Award for Mourik Industry
Recently, our colleagues proudly received the SAS Award. They earned this recognition for their outstanding safety performance on the Westerlee project.
Challenge
The construction of the flushing building in Westerlee was by no means an easy task. The location in particular — along the roadside verge and above an existing high-voltage cable route — made it a challenging project. Safety therefore received full attention from all parties involved.
At Mourik, it was an integral part of daily practice: clear control measures, start-of-work meetings, and the proactive identification and mitigation of risks. Dennis Lauw, Project Manager, explains: “During this project, we regularly received compliments on our approach and our focus on safety. Winning this award now is a great compliment to everyone who made an effort every single day to work safely.”
About the project
With the installation of three new compensation coils at the Westerlee substation, reactive power (electricity that flows through cables but cannot be used) is significantly reduced. Mourik Industry was responsible for all civil construction activities, from design through to completion.
Mourik is increasingly carrying out projects within the energy transition. With the recent acquisition of GPW Turbine Support, a specialist in the maintenance and repair of turbines, rotating equipment, pumps and compressors, we have further strengthened our position in the energy transition.
