Kiwa-certified PFAS removal from fire suppression systems
On April 29, 2026, Mourik Belgium received the Kiwa certificate for the safe removal of PFAS from fixed fire suppression systems. With this certification, we are the first Belgian company to demonstrably meet the strict requirements for safety, quality, and sustainability in the cleaning of PFAS-containing fire suppression systems. Kiwa is a TIC (Testing, Inspection, and Certification) company that assesses processes and procedures for the safety, quality, and sustainability of products, systems, and companies.
A single certified approach, less risk and downtime
This certification comes at a crucial time. In October 2025, the European Commission further tightened existing PFAS regulations. As a result, many organizations must clean their fire suppression systems, make technical modifications, and switch to PFAS-free alternatives. This applies not only to industrial companies but also to organizations such as fire departments, airports, and Civil Protection agencies.
Mourik offers a Kiwa-certified comprehensive approach in which all steps are seamlessly integrated. From analysis and cleaning to the delivery of a system ready for PFAS-free fire suppression. This allows organizations to minimize unnecessary costs, risks, and downtime.
PFAS in fire suppression systems: a persistent problem
PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals,” hardly break down at all. Many existing fire suppression systems still contain PFAS-containing firefighting foam. European regulations therefore require thorough and verifiable cleaning, including technical modifications to the system.
Mourik has developed a cleaning process that effectively removes PFAS and makes systems compatible with PFAS-free firefighting foam. Standard cleaning is not sufficient for this purpose. PFAS adheres to the inner walls of pipes and tanks, making flushing with water inadequate. The method combines manual, mechanical, and chemical cleaning with a specially developed adsorbent that binds and removes PFAS. Our technique is now also being applied across national borders. Colleagues at Mourik Industry are using the same approach on similar projects in the Netherlands.
Following extensive testing and several successful field assignments, this comprehensive approach has now been awarded the Kiwa certificate, demonstrating that the entire process—from scope definition to delivery—meets the applicable requirements for safety, quality, and sustainability.
The certification was obtained under the K21045-SCP10 scheme, specifically for the cleaning of fire suppression systems in which PFAS-containing firefighting foam has been used. SCP10 is carried out under the TIC scheme K21045 Fire Protection Systems. Thanks to this certification, Mourik Belgium offers organizations a reliable and future-proof solution for PFAS in fire suppression systems.
