55 years of experience on the road: drivers Bart and Johan share their experiences
Today is 'Truck Driver's Day,' and we at Mourik are putting our drivers in the spotlight. Colleagues Bart Dewitte and Johan Bamps together have 55 years of experience on the counter at Mourik. They are happy to share their stories and tell what the job really entails.
Love for trucks instilled in the family
Bart and Johan are a good match, not only because they have worked at Mourik for a long time, but also because they had similar childhoods. Both grew up with parents who owned a transport company. So they came into contact with trucks at an early age. "From an early age, I drove along with my father during holidays. Sometimes even then I was allowed to take over the wheel to drive the last bit to the garage, which I really enjoyed." Says Bart.
More than just driving
A truck driver's job is much more than just driving. Bart explains: "You need insight to properly assess situations, load and unload safely, and have the necessary documents in order. Moreover, you need to plan well ahead, for example which routes are suitable for freight traffic."
"Times change, and the traffic jams don't make it any nicer. I know the Belgian roads like the back of my hand and so I used to find a way to avoid them. Nowadays that's difficult. Despite this, I still love my job. Every job has advantages and disadvantages like that." Adds Johan.
I find the pleasant contact with my colleagues, both from cleaning and construction, a great added value.
However, the work is not just about the technical aspects. Bart emphasises: "I find the pleasant contact with my colleagues, both from cleaning and construction, a great added value. I also feel the appreciation of the site managers. The moment any problems arise, we consult together on how to make the necessary adjustments to ensure both safe access to the sites and on-site loading and unloading of materials."
On this special day, we thank our drivers for their commitment. Thanks to them, literally Mourik keeps moving!
