For LyondellBasell, Mourik installed retaining walls while tanks remained partially filled

PGS29

Driving through the Europoort Botlek area, you can’t miss them: storage tanks.

These tanks are situated in so-called tank pits, which under new legislation must comply with the stringent PGS 29 safety requirements. To meet these standards, the pits are now being equipped with concrete retaining walls that act as a crucial safety barrier in the event of a leak.

A Smart Approach

At Lyondell’s Botlek site, Mourik recently completed the installation of these retaining walls. Normally, this is already a challenging task, but in this case there was an added complexity: the tanks still contained product—about half of their capacity. This required a carefully phased and innovative approach during execution.

The result speaks for itself: the tank pits are now safely equipped with retaining walls, and a satisfied Lyondell praised the Mourik team for their in-depth expertise and strong safety performance.

In the final stage, a liquid-tight steel fiber concrete floor will be applied—work that will once again be carried out by our colleagues.
