A ten-year contract for sustainable energy infrastructure

Gasunie and MVOI are jump-starting the energy transition

Article

Gasunie has been managing the Dutch gas transport network for several decades. But the energy world is changing at a rapid pace. Over the next ten years, Gasunie is set to invest four billion euros in transport pipelines for the energy transition. Together with six specialized parties, including Mourik subsidiary MVOI, the company is working on solutions for new forms of energy transport and storage.

From natural gas to sustainable energy

Gasunie is an energy network operator. In the Netherlands and northern Germany, the company manages and maintains the infrastructure for large-scale gas transport and storage. Currently this is mainly natural gas, but with the energy transition this will increasingly shift to green gas and hydrogen. Gasunie is also contributing to the construction and management of heat and CO2 networks. ‘For 40 years, MVOI has been working on the construction and maintenance of the gas network, and we will continue to do so. But we are now gradually preparing the network for hydrogen’, says Ruud Mooij, manager at MVOI. ‘A hydrogen pipeline will connect major Dutch ports and industrial areas.’

In addition, work is underway on carbon storage in the North Sea and heat networks are being linked to the local networks of energy suppliers. Ruud explains, ‘The transmission pipeline that brings residual heat (energy) from the Port of Rotterdam to residential areas in the The Hague-Leiden region is a good example.’

Ten-year contract

The ten-year contract requires long-term cooperation and a well-thought-through approach. The energy transition raises many questions, but also offers opportunities to realize innovative solutions together with Gasunie and other partners. We are always looking for the party with the right expertise, working in various constellations on various projects.

Ferry Ham, Manager Operations Projects at Gasunie: ‘Without partners like MVOI, we would not be able to maintain, manage or build new pipelines. So you can see why this is a crucial partnership. I look forward to the coming years in which we will jump-start the energy transition together.’

MVOI brings specific knowledge and experience to the table. Ruud explains, ‘We can put all our talents to use in this contract. We excel in technically complex projects, e.g. in cities, under dikes or in Natura 2000 areas where we have to take nitrogen emissions into account. We use sustainable equipment developed by Mourik for these projects.

This contract is a good example of the concrete realization of energy transition solutions. It represents a new way of working, founded on cooperation, customization and flexibility.

‘Without partners like MVOI, we would not be able to maintain, manage or build new pipelines. So you can see why this is a crucial partnership.'
