Flanders asbestos-safe by 2040? Our contribution to a major challenge

Article

Flanders wants to be asbestos-free by 2040. This is an ambitious goal and at Mourik we are happy to do our bit. During the Easter holidays of 2025, our colleagues will go to work in primary school GO! Next Herx in Herk-de-Stad to remove asbestos-containing material safely. A job that requires care and skill. The VRT NWS Journaal stopped by and spoke to our project manager Steve Danckers about the complexities of asbestos removal.

Stringent safety measures in asbestos remediation

Asbestos removal is a labour-intensive and strictly regulated process. "Everything is removed by hand and strict safety measures apply," Steve Danckers explains. "Our employees wear special respiratory protection and are allowed to work a maximum of three two-hour shifts per day in the hermetically sealed area."

For both the safety of our employees and the environment, monitoring air measurements are carried out daily. After finishing their shift, our people have to go through a special shower and all their clothes, including underwear, are discarded. This makes it a particularly intensive job.

Steve stresses that our colleagues are well protected: "Thanks to strict safety procedures, our employees come into less contact with asbestos fibres than the average citizen."

A small contribution to this great challenge

At Mourik, we make a small but important contribution to this great challenge with our expertise in safe and sustainable asbestos removal. Thus, step by step, we help build a safer living environment for everyone.

We can tell you a lot about this, but no one explains it better than colleague Steve himself. Watch the video above!
