Department in the picture: waste management

Article

Waste is an inevitable part of the industrial world, complying with legislation on this is essential for our environment and safety. At Mourik, we are committed to optimal waste management, with our team ensuring that waste materials are processed properly. Chief project manager Luc Andries has been leading this process since 2006. Recently, Lissa de Hoog and Michiel Bulcke joined the team. We are happy to let our new colleagues have their say.

Van onbekend afval tot verantwoorde verwerking

"Sometimes a customer wants something disposed of, but doesn't know exactly what it is," says Michiel, who recently started at Mourik. With his background in laboratory work, he was looking for a position that combined technical, organisational and commercial skills. "Then we take samples, have them analysed and determine the right processing method based on the results. We also arrange transport to the processor," Michiel explains.

When hazardous substances are transported, it must be done according to ADR regulations. This means that vehicles and packaging carry the correct pictograms and waste is linked to the correct EURAL code. This is the only way hazardous and non-hazardous waste can be transported to a licensed treatment facility. So this requires proper administration. Colleague Lissa de Hoog deals with preparing transport documents and certificates on a daily basis. "Preparing the transport documents and all the administration we coordinate together as much as possible. I'm more back office, preparing certificates and making sure all the paperwork is in order," says Lissa.

Challenges and Future in waste Management

What makes their work so interesting? "I come from the chemical sector, so waste materials were largely new to me. But you learn an awful lot here and see immediate results if you handle everything correctly," says Lissa.

For Michiel, the satisfaction is mainly in the interaction. "We come into contact with all departments within Mourik and with all kinds of colleagues in different positions. The contact with external partners and the waste world also makes the work extra exciting."

The future of waste management at Mourik? Lissa would like to see it a lot more digital. "There is a lot of paperwork involved, but digitalisation is on the way. That will make the work a lot more efficient and clearer."

At Mourik, waste management remains a crucial part of our services. Thanks to the expertise of experienced forces like Luc and the fresh eyes of new colleagues like Lissa and Michiel, we continue to optimise our process.
