Circular renovation at Air Traffic Control The Netherlands
Mourik has been providing preventative and corrective maintenance and working on projects for Air Traffic Control The Netherlands (LVNL) for several years. The emphasis throughout is on sustainability and quality. Examples include the circular renovation of the auditorium at Schiphol-Oost and the roofing of the control tower at Schiphol. The result? Smart reuse of materials and innovative solutions.
Circularity as a guiding principle
The LVNL ensures safe, efficient and environmentally-conscious handling of air traffic 24/7. Patricia van der Kruijs, Construction Engineer at LVNL, explains: ‘Where possible, we apply a circular approach at airports. It may not always be the simplest way to do things, but we always strive for the best outcome.’
Mourik keeps up with the latest product developments in the market and advised on circular possibilities. Patricia: ‘Sometimes choosing the well-trodden path of traditional solutions is easier. It’s nice that Mourik thinks along with us, giving us their independent assessment of the various options available to us.’ Danny Gouweleeuw, who oversaw the project on behalf of Mourik, explains: ‘We suggested alternative, circular materials, such as white roofing which reduces CO2 and also lowers the temperature.’
Another priority was the reuse of materials. Danny: ‘The old windows have been completely reused. We even carefully disassembled and reassembled the grilles. We applied the same approach to the chairs and acoustic panels in the auditorium. The main idea was to minimize waste as much as possible.’
A transparent approach to future-proof infrastructure
Both the LVNL and Mourik were happy with the result. Patricia: ‘Because Mourik is onsite daily, we can move very quickly. They understand our interests and think along with us proactively.’ Danny adds: ‘What made this assignment was so unique was the project managers as well as people on the work floor were involved every step of the way. This was greatly appreciated.’
Thanks to this approach, the LVNL can be assured of a thorough and circular approach that contributes to future-proof infrastructure.
